Green dot on folder. What does it mean?

    Hello!
Mostly everyhing is in the title. But just to be sure, here is an image.
    What does it mean?
What am I supposed to do with it.
Just in case, is there a way to disable it?
    Thanks.

    Hello!
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, partly. It explained how to get rid of it. I could do it, but it came back for no apparent reason.
So maybe better than fighting against it, I should try first to find out what it actually is and how I can use it.
Apparently these are notifications. But notifications of what? What does this 1 mean? Is there a new file
I have never opened? Anything else? If I double click, right-click, etc, I can't get any info.
A few minutes ago, the 1 became 2, I closed a window, it's back to 1. I tried to open another window
it's still 1, I tried to right-click the green dot, etc, etc...

    Thanks
